Our take
Worth paying for — this is the version people actually keep using.
Pros
- +The modular hex board means no two games play the same, so it stays on the table for years instead of gathering dust
- +Trading and negotiation keep everyone engaged even when it isn't their turn
- +Huge ecosystem of expansions (Seafarers, Cities & Knights, 5-6 player extension) to grow into
Cons
- −Base box only supports 3-4 players — bigger groups need the separately sold extension
- −Dice-driven resource rolls mean a bad-luck game can feel out of your control, which frustrates some players
Best for: Families and friend groups ready to graduate from Monopoly to a real strategy game without a steep learning curve.
Alternatives to consider: Ticket to Ride, Azul
